Course Description

Led by: Dr. Heather Welch

Have you ever wondered why certain colors carry special meaning—or how those meanings have changed over time? In this engaging session, we’ll explore the rich history of color and what it has represented across different cultures and time periods.

Inspired by Color: A Natural History of the World by Victoria Finlay, this lecture brings together stories, art, and history to show how colors have shaped human experience. Through a variety of visual examples, we’ll look at artwork and everyday objects from around the world and uncover the stories behind the colors used.

This session is designed to be informative, enjoyable, and accessible—no prior background in art or history is needed. Along the way, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of how color influences meaning, recognize notable works of art, and discover how perspectives can vary across cultures.

You’ll leave with a greater appreciation for the role of color in history and everyday life—and perhaps begin to see familiar colors in a whole new way. Suggestions for further reading will also be provided for those who wish to continue exploring.
