Course Description

Led by: Jimmy Proffitt

Join us for a personal and engaging look at how growing up and living in Appalachia shapes food, family traditions, and storytelling.

In this session, Jimmy Proffitt shares how Appalachian life has influenced his cooking, writing, and teaching—culminating in a journey from regional storytelling to a viral video and the creation of a long-envisioned cookbook.

Participants will learn what defines Appalachia, explore how Appalachian foodways differ from broader Southern traditions, and gain insight into how everyday meals carry history and meaning.

Through short lecture, storytelling, and Q&A, participants will also receive a handout on creating their own family cornbread recipe and be encouraged to think about their own food traditions in new ways.
